Activities and Clubs at Walker

Tuesday Recess Coding Club

The Library is offering a Recess Coding Club to students in grades 2-5 each Tuesday in the Learning Commons. We need to limit the club to 15 students per grade level at each recess time listed below, but we will cycle through as many times as needed this year so all students in grades 2-5 will have a chance to learn how to code!

The first group will start on Tuesday, October 15th and run for 4 weeks. Ms. Bolton will let teachers know what session each student is assigned to, and when they will come to the Coding Club.

 Recess times:

2nd grade 11:00-11:30am

3rd grade 10:30-11:00am

4th grade 11:30-12:00am

5th grade 12:30-1:00am

If you would like your child to participate and learn about coding please fill out the form at http://gg.gg/f5rok

If you have any questions please email Ms. Bolton at cbolton@mckinneyisd.net or call 469-302-4650.

Choir

The Walker Choir is open to 4th and 5th grade students who love to sing. Choir is an enrichment program offered to students who want to sing challenging music literature and participate in a group beyond the music classroom setting

Rehearsals are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30-7:55am in the music room (B111). We will perform in events around the school throughout the year.

Makerspace/STEAM Lab

A Makerspaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering and tinkering.

The Walker Library has a Makerspace that is open to students on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during their recess time in the Learning Commons. This Makerspace provides opportunities and activities that focus on the 4C’s of a successful 21st-century student: Communication, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Collaboration. Students can work on the current challenge or use any of the wonderful items in our Makerspace.

Student Council

Student Council is an organization that promotes citizenship, scholarship, leadership, and school spirit as it fosters the development of our schools, cities, state, and country. 5th grade students are allowed to run for officer positions (President, Vice President, Secretary and Communication Director). We also allow students to run for class representative so that we have at least one boy and one girl on the student council from each 5th-grade class. 4th grade students are allowed to run for class representative. Each class votes on one class representative to attend Student Council meetings and report back to the class about the meetings and events. Student Council also supports service learning as projects are planned to benefit the students, the teachers, and the community.
